All about Dilute Labradors
-
A Dilute-Factor Labrador is a Labrador Retriever with a specific color variation in its coat. This variation is caused by a combination of genetic factors that affect the production of pigment in the dog's hair.
The pigment responsible for the color of a dog's coat is called melanin. There are two types of melanin: eumelanin, which produces black and brown colors, and pheomelanin, which produces red and yellow colors. The production of melanin is regulated by genes called melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) and agouti signaling protein (ASIP).
As a specific example, in Charcoal Labradors, a mutation in the MC1R gene causes a decrease in the production of eumelanin, resulting in a gray or charcoal color. This mutation is also known as the "dilute" gene, and it is recessive, meaning that both parents must carry the gene for it to be expressed in their offspring.
The dilute colors in Labradors can vary in shade, with some dogs having a darker or lighter coat. Additionally, dilute Labradors may have blue or green eyes, which is also caused by a genetic mutation.
-
It is important to note that while the visually appealing color of a Charcoal Labrador’s coat may be visually appealing, it has no impact on their health or temperament. Charcoal Labradors are no different from other Labradors in terms of their physical or behavioral characteristics.
-
A dilute coat color does not have any impact on the ability to register a qualified Dilute-Factor Labrador. Charcoal Labradors are classified as Black Labs, Champagne & Dudleys are classified as Yellow Labs & Silvers are classified as Chocolate Labs by the AKC.
-
Silver Labs have a coat color that appears to be a light, almost white shade of gray. This color variation is also caused by a mutation in the MC1R gene, but it is a different mutation than the one that causes the charcoal color. Silver Labs were initially considered controversial within the Labrador community, but they are now recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) as a legitimate variation of the breed.
Champagne Labs have a coat color that appears to be a pale, almost pinkish shade of yellow. This color variation is caused by a combination of the dilute gene and a mutation in the ASIP gene. Champagne Labs are relatively rare and are not yet recognized as a legitimate variation of the breed by the AKC.
Charcoal Labs, as mentioned earlier, have a coat color that appears to be a deep, rich shade of gray. This color variation is also caused by a mutation in the MC1R gene, but it is a different mutation than the one that causes the silver color.
There are other coat variations that are not caused by dilution, but they may be less common or less widely recognized. These variations include:
Red fox Labs have a coat color that ranges from a deep reddish-brown to a lighter golden color. This color variation is caused by a recessive gene that affects the production of eumelanin.
Dudley Labs have a coat color that appears to be a light beige or pinkish hue. This color variation is caused by a lack of pigmentation in the nose and around the eyes, giving the impression of a "noseless" or "pink" Labrador.
Brindle Labs have a coat color that features a pattern of dark stripes on a lighter background color. This color variation is caused by a dominant gene that affects the distribution of pigment in the hair.
It's important to note that these variations do not necessarily indicate a difference in temperament or behavior. All Labradors, regardless of coat color, are friendly, loyal, and intelligent dogs.
